A good friend of ours, who shall be nameless, female architect - who has already done Architecture Foundation Master Classes in New Zealand 2007 and in Ireland 2011, is climbing to have a look at the venue for the forthcoming Master Class with Arizona architect Rick Joy, seminal Australian architect and teacher Richard Leplastrier and award winning Peter Stutchbury in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, 10 - 16 March. Participants already registered include seven or eight mid-career architects who run their own practices. The program is open to senior students, graduates, academics and practitioners young and old, and satisfies the minimum requirement from CPD Points for one year in NSW and attracts 200 CPD Points in New Zealand. Over 1000 architects entered the competition 'to create an energy efficient single-family home'. The design had not only to minimise climate change emissions but, given the location, stand up to extreme climatic conditions. Design by Peter Stutchbury with Richard Smith and Ann Bassett

"The location was almost the polar opposite of the Australian environment. Designing for our local environment is based on how you cool a building. In Cherepovets and the wider Russian extreme, it's just the opposite."

The 2012 Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class has been confirmed and the dates are Sunday 8 July - Sunday 22 July 2012. Due to the high Australian $ dollar, the Architecture Foundation has decided to reduce the fee to AUS$6600 to help compensate and the fee includes the educational program, lectures, site visits, all 14 nights accommodation and most food, but not international or inter-state travel to Sydney. A new book 'Under the Edge' the Architecture of Peter Stutchbury has been published by the Architecture Foundation Australia.

This elegant book will bring the work of Peter Stutchbury Architecture to a greater world audience and was released at the RIBA in London on 24 May.

It includes critical essays on his work by his good friends Richard Leplastrier and Professor Brit Andresen, and by Ingerid Helsing Almaas, Editor of Arkitektur N, the Norwegian Architectural Review. Stutchbury, in his own words and pictures, explains the underpinnings of his philosophy and practice. A collection of ‘Projects in Brief’ covers seminal works of his early practice. Fourteen major recent ‘Projects in Detail’ are presented, none of which have been previously published, with explanatory texts, sketches, plans and new photography by Michael Nicholson. There is an illustrated chronology of all his works and a section on his working studio.

On being presented with a copy at Ghost Studio 2011 in Nova Scotia, Kenneth Frampton is reported to have said it was one of the finest architecture books he had seen! Or - a lesser known architect Matej Gašperič, of BiroGašperič, Ljubljana, Slovenia wrote "It is a great book …. since Peter really has a lot to show, and I enjoy it a lot, it is a source of inspiration and I would recommend it to anyone."

It is now available worldwide, it is being distributed in Australia and New Zealand by the Architecture Foundation Australia and throughout the rest of the world by IDEA Books in the Netherlands.

The 'Birabahn' Aboriginal and Torres Straits Island Cultural Centre at the University of Newcastle, Australia. One of the few buildings designed together by Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury, with Su Harper, completed in 2002, which was recipient of the 2003 Australian Institute of Architects Sir Zelaman Cowan Award for Public Buildings.

Leplastrier and Stutchbury will present a lecture 'Architecture at the Edge of Divergence' at the RIBA, Portland Place, London on Tuesday 24 May at 6.30pm. They will reflect upon the wisdom that can be learned from our lands, and from our elders, and how they each have explored, through their own architecture, the divergent paths that lie ahead. Leplastrier is a Gold Medallist of the Australian Institute and recipient of the Finnish Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award also won by Renzo Piano, Kengo Kuma, Peter Zumthor and José Cruz Ovalle. Stutchbury has been a winner of numerous Australian Institute Awards and published internationally in GA Houses, Abitare, etc.. He won the 2008 International Living Steel Competition for extreme housing in Cherepovets in Russia, he has held the Catedra (Chair) Luis Barragán in Mexico, was a guest tutor at the 2010 Ghost Studio in Nova Scotia, and has recently completed a house in Japan for renowned fashion designer Issey Miyake. Wim Goes Murcutt Alumnus

Wim Goes' exquisite wooden extension to a house on a pond in Belgium.
This very fine private refuge is located in a tiny hamlet in the Flemish district of Belgium, about 10 kilometers from the country’s third-largest city of Gent. Gent-based architecture studio Wim Goes Architectuur designed the beautiful extension to this residence. The wooden addition sits above a new wine cellar and extends partly over the pond. There is a suggestion of antipodean erosion of building edges. Wim was a participant on the 2006 Glenn Murcutt International Master Class in Australia, and went back for seconds, attending the 2008 ‘ozetecture’ Master Class in New Zealand with Ian athfield, Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury. Richard Leplastrier was recipient of the 2004 'Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award' presented in Finland, also won by Richard Rogers, Peter Zumthor, Kengo Kuma and José Cruz Ovalle. Murcutt Exhibition Update

The exhibition Glenn Murcutt : Architecture for Place ends on World Architecture Day 4 October 2010 at Melbourne Museum and transfers to QUT Art Museum in Brisbane opening on 13 October and running to 28 November. It then transfers to the new Glasshouse Gallery in Port Macquarie opening on 3 December and running until 30 January 2011. It is scheduled to open at the Taipei Fine Art Museum, Taiwan, on 19 Match 2011 and run until 12 June. Efforts are in progress to then take the exhibition to Europe. 2003 Murcutt Master Class participant Meredith Bowles, Cambridge, England, has been recipient of the Small House category award in the 2010 Daily Telegraph National British Home Awards. The judging panel was chaired by past RIBA president Sunand Prasad, and included Stirling prize winner Alison Brooks. He joins several other alumni of the Murcutt Master Class in winning architecture awards for completed works since their attendance at the Australian Master Class. Meredith, with 2001 Murcutt Master Class participant Piers Taylor, Bath, England, has been active in developing ‘Studio in the Woods’, a program for students of architecture which runs each year in England in July. The 2010 'Studio' was held on the Isle of Wight. The 'Spirit of Riversdale' lives on.

Rick Joy, eminent architect from Tucson Arizona USA, joined Richard Leplastrier, Glenn Murcutt and Peter Stutchbury as a guest critic on the tenth Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class.

33 participants from 19 nations across the world attended the annual Master Class in July at Glenn's "master work" the Boyd Education Centre 'Riversdale' on the banks of the Shoalhaven River south of Sydney. Murcutt Exhibition on the move

The exhibition 'Glenn Murcutt : Architecture for Place', at the new Gallery of Australian Design in Canberra.

The exhibition, originally shown at the TOTO Gallery Ma in Tokyo, is currently touring Australia. After Canberra, it will open at the Melbourne Museum, Carlton Gardens, on 15 July 2010; at the Queensland University of Technology Art Museum in Brisbane on 13 October 2010 and at the new Glasshouse Gallery in Port Macquarie on 3 December 2010. Great Student Summer School 2010

Thirty two senior students of architecture from as far afield as Argentina, Bangladesh, Costa Rica, England, Kenya and Papua New Guinea joined with students from New Zealand and Australia at beautiful Pittwater north of Sydney for a one-week residential 'total immersion' studio based master class with eminent Australian architect teachers Richard Leplastrier, winner of the Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award (Finland), and Peter Stutchbury, winner of the Living Steel Extreme Climate Housing Competition for Cherepovets, Russia. Working in groups of four, the participants produced design proposals for a group residential facility at the water's edge in the nearby National Park. Piers Taylor in England, participant on the very first 2001 Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class in Australia, has won the 2009 Architects Journal Ramboll Whitbybird Small Projects Award (for the best project in the UK under £250k). This award was also won in 2008 by Meredith Bowles, who also did the Glenn Murcutt Master Class in 2003, for his Black House in Cambridgeshire. Piers and Meredith have been organising their own 'Master Class' for students of architecture with Ted Cullinan and others, called the ‘Studio in the Woods’. Richard Leplastrier, great architect, great teacher, has been awarded the prestigious Dreyer Foundation Prize of Honour in Denmark – the first non-Dane to receive this award. The Dreyer Foundation makes an annual award to an architect who has made an outstanding contribution to architectural thinking and to society. Lene Tranberg, jury member, in her citation states “Richard Leplastrier’s architecture reveals a profound understanding of sustainability in the deepest sense of the term. Through a philosophy that is best summarized in the statement – let’s cultivate less - he has developed a truly original and personal approach to living and creating with dignity and respect.” Richard was also awarded the Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award in Finland, a prize also received by Renzo Piano, Peter Zumthor, Kengo Kuma and José Cruz Ovalle. Richard is a friend and contemporary of Glenn Murcutt and is a principal tutor on the annual Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class in Australia. A major exhibition of 'blow up' drawings and models of the built works of Glenn Murcutt, with stunning photographs by Anthony Browell, is running at the prestigious Museum of Sydney, a short walk from Sydney Opera House, from 13 June - 5 October 2009. The exhibition was presented by TOTO at the Gallery Ma in Tokyo from June to August 2008 and was curated by Prof. Tom Heneghan and academic colleagues from Sydney schools of architecture. It has been reproduced for display worldwide by the Architecture Foundation Australia. The exhibition is accompanied by two new books on Murcutt published by TOTO, a volume of photographs and a volume of drawings. Glenn Murcutt will be interviewed at a public event at Sydney Opera House on the last day of the exhibition - World Architecture Day, 5 October. The Sydney exhibition has been sponsored by the NSW Architects Registration Board. It is planned for the exhibition to be toured to Melbourne, Brisbane and to overseas venues. Peter Stutchbury has been invited to take the Catedra (Chair) Luis Barragan in Mexico in November 2008, an annual invitation where the 8 schools of architecture in Mexico invite a professor/teacher for a 2-3 week intensive Master Class program of lectures and tutorials. Peter has proposed that he share the Catedra with his close friend and mentor Richard Leplastrier. Peter is a leading Australian practitioner whose work has been widely published internationally and he has received numerous architecture awards. He recently won the International Iron and Steel Institute competition for Sustainable Housing in Cherepovets, Russia. Peter Stutchbury's winning design for extreme climate housing in Russia

Peter Stutchbury and his colleague Richard Smith have been selected winners of the third International Iron and Steel Institute 'Living Steel' Competition that was decided in Finland in June 08. 12 teams were selected from 250 to travel to Finland to complete and present their proposals for prefabricated steel housing for the extreme climate of Russia. Peter Stutchbury will be one of the lead tutors at the New Zealand Architecture Master Class 21-27 September 08, the Architecture Summer School 15-21 February 09 and the ninth Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class to be held again at Glenn's "master work" the Boyd Education Centre 'Riversdale' on the banks of the Shoalhaven River south of Sydney 12-26 July 09. Glenn Murcutt attended the opening of a major exhibition on his life work at the prestigious Toto Gallery Ma in Tokyo on 12 June 08. The exhibition will run to August 08. Two books have been published to accompany the exhibition - one of photographs of Murcutt's completed buildings and the other a folio of his drawings. Glenn Murcutt returns to Australia to conduct the annual Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class, that commences on 5 July and will again be held at his 'master work' Riversdale, the Boyd Education centre south of Sydney. Lindsay Johnston Sustainable House Off the Grid

The Four Horizons Sustainable House by Master Class Convener Professor Lindsay Johnston has been published in the recent book 'Prefab Design', by Josep Minguet (Instituto Monsa de Ediciones, Barcelona). It has also been in 'Off the Grid' by Lori Ryker (Gibbs Smith, Utah, USA) and 'Stahlarchitektur International', by Veronika Lenze and Klaus Th. Luig (Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, München, Germany). The house has a prefabricated steel 'fly' roof, to neutralise the heat of the sun, over two habitable modules. It is powered by photovoltaic and water heating solar, harvests rainwater and has been the subject of complete thermal and energy audit, including embodied energy and life cycle analysis. www.ozetecture.org

Glenn Murcutt opens windows on new ways of seeing architecture and nature at his masterwork, Riversdale, the Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre on the Shoalhaven River south of Sydney. This picture was taken during the 2007 International Master Class when Glenn gave participants a guided tour of the building. The detailing of the bunkroom windows is exquisite.

Winner of RIBA Manser Medal, England

Meredith Bowles' 'Black House' in Cambridgeshire, England received the RIBA 2004 Manser Medal, for
the best house in the UK.

Here are Meredith's comments on his experience at the Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class - "I took part in the GM Masterclass 2003; it started as an idea that I might broaden my thinking and allow me to study at the hands of a 'master'. It turned out to be an invigorating, concentrated two weeks on how to focus on things that matter. We got to see and experience some great buildings; I learned from Glenn how to be rigourous to the n'th degree, and tease the best out of a project; from Rick how a building is an envelope for life; from Stutch how bold an architectural move can be. These are architects with conviction, rigour, and with an eye for beauty through construction. To pit oneself against such formidable tutors is to raise one's game. To do so in such a hospitable communal atmosphere was pleasure indeed- a rare two weeks."

Dave Launder's House at Kaitawa

Dave Launder did the very first Glenn Murcutt Master Class in 2001. He was at that time a 'mature' architect. Dave has just collected a New Zealand Institute of Architects 'Supreme Award' for his house at Kaitawa Road near Wellington. Here is what Dave has to say about the Master Class experience - "The GMMC of 2001 was a (rather belated) turning point in my career as an architect, to meet and learn from the four 'masters' was something that I should have done in my forties when I was building structures as sculptures, interesting shapes perhaps but with no cognisance of their deeper needs or the total environment. To hear, in particular, Richard's approach to simplicity and to work through how simplicity could hold poetry and romance, to look at how Glenn met primary needs and made beauty and to learn how to tie all these approaches to the specific environment can be so obvious – it should be essential for every mature architect."
